Brief background Especially on Mother’s Day, we recognize how important mothers are to anchoring strong families and nurturing future generations of Americans. Throughout history and across all successful cultures, marriage between a man and a woman has always been essential to promoting strong families and to providing security and stability to mothers and their children. Yet today in America and around the world, marriage and the family are under assault from many quarters ,particularly from those who advocate legalizing same sex marriage. To do this would negatively and forever affect how we and especially future generations would view the role of marriage and the family--institutions that are crucial to our future as a nation and a society. Because of recent actions by the courts and some state and local governments, the only certain way we can defend traditional marriage can be defended is to amend our Constitution to specifically define it as the union of a man and a woman. (Click here for a more detailed discussion of the need for a constitutional amendment to defend marriage.) An amendment to defend marriage has been introduced in Congress and whether to legalize same sex marriage will be a campaign issue this fall. President Bush has endorsed amending the Constitution to defend marriage by specifically defining it as the union of a man and a woman. Sending him the Mother’s Day e-card shows support for this position. While Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, the apparent Democratic nominee for president, has said he opposes same sex marriage, he opposes a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman. The logic of his position is unclear, especially since he supports an amendment to the Massachusetts constitution to define marriage this way after a Massachusetts court ordered the legalization of same sex marriage in that state. Defend Marriage sent him a letter pointing out the apparent inconsistency of his logic on this issue and asking for qualification of his position. The text of the letter is available here. Public pressure on Sen. Kerry, demonstrated by things such as sending this e-card, could convince him to change his current position opposing any constitutional amendment to defend marriage. |
