Where are the Defenders of Marriage and the Family?

Sharon Slater, President, United Families International

Dear Friend,

Within a few weeks the Senate is scheduled to vote on the most significant social issue any of us will likely take part in deciding during our lifetimes--the vote on whether to pass and send to the House the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA).

But senators on both sides of this issue are starting to ask a question that is becoming particularly disturbing: where are the defenders of marriage and the family? Although opinion polls show overwhelming public opposition to legalizing same sex “marriage,” the majority of Americans are not conveying this opinion to their senators. Many do not even know that a vote on the FMA is scheduled in the Senate for mid July

Right now, to be perfectly frank, we do not have the votes necessary to pass this amendment.

If we do not pass this amendment, the nation and society we pass on to our children and to future generations will be radically different. This amendment will send a message to all about what America believes about the family and the importance of mothers and fathers. Children need both a mother and a father. If we do not pass this amendment Massachusetts will continue to sanction the deliberate creation of motherless and fatherless families and most likely, other states will be forced to do the same in the future. Same sex marriage is a dangerous, radical societal experiment and our children are the guinea pigs.

What governments recognize you tend to get more of. In Scandinavia, since same sex unions became legal there has been a decrease in heterosexual marriages. Marriage there has been diluted and lost much of its meaning and purpose.

We cannot sit back and let this happen in the United States of America. I urge you to please help preserve marriage by acting in the following ways:

1. If you have not yet contacted your senators please do so now and urge them to both vote for Federal Marriage Amendment and actively work for its passage. We have made it fast and easy for you to contact them (click here). We provide you with a prewritten e-mail that you can send (or you can write your own) with a click. Or you can print a letter to mail or fax to them.

2. Please forward this alert on to family and friends with a personal note from you and encourage them to contact their senators.

3. Sign the United States Petition to Defend Marriage if you have not already done so. Please encourage others to also sign it by forwarding this alert on to them with a personal note from you. This petition will be delivered to senators before the vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment by teams of Defend Marriage volunteers and United Families International staff. The more signatures we have on the petition, the more effective it will be in encouraging them to vote for the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Just as we have inherited the benefits of the selfless and farsighted acts of past generations, this is our opportunity and our responsibility to ensure that our children will inherit the strongest and healthiest society and nation we can give them.

Please join us in this important cause!
