Please Help Us Defend Marriage on Election Day
Dear Defender of Marriage,
The election is just four weeks from today. For these
next four weeks, the most vital thing any of us can do to defend
marriage and the family is to work to pass the state constitution
marriage amendments that will be on the November ballot in eleven
states. All of these amendments will help preserve
marriage as the exclusive union of a man and a woman. All will
help prevent the legalization of same-sex marriage or marriage-like
arrangements for same- sex couples, such as civil unions.
The states with marriage amendments on their ballots are Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Utah. Two states, Missouri and Louisiana, have already adopted marriage amendments to their state constitutions by overwhelming majorities.
If you live in one of these states you have a special opportunity--and responsibility--to defend marriage by doing whatever you can to help pass these amendments by the largest possible majorities. Over the next several weeks, we will be providing you with information and suggestions that will help you in this effort.
If you do not live in one of these states, there are still several things you can do to help. One is to contact any family, friends, work associates or others you know in these states who would support the marriage amendment. Explain the importance of passing it and ask them if they are planning to vote for it. You may well be the most credible and effective source of information they will receive about their amendment. If you think they might not vote at all, encourage them to do so.
In many places, only about half of eligible voters actually vote, even in closely contested elections. And if there is one lesson to be gained from the 2000 presidential election, it is that every vote does count.
The other thing that all of us can do to help in these amendment campaigns is to make a financial contribution to support the effort to pass them. Our opponents are extremely well funded, pouring millions of dollars into defeating these amendments. They understand that with each of them we pass we are that much closer to passing a federal constitutional amendment. When we accomplish that, they know that their efforts to radically redefine and undermine marriage and the family will have failed.
Because we have both the facts and majority public opinion on our side, we do not have to match our opponents dollar for dollar to win. But we will certainly lose if we do not raise at least enough money to make sure that voters understand what these amendments actually do and why they are essential. Our opponents are using misinformation and outright lies to mislead and confuse voters into voting against these amendments. We must counter that with the facts and the truth.
All contributions to Defend Marriage between now and the election will be spent entirely in supporting the passage of these state constitutional amendments. The section below explains how you can contribute easily and securely on line or by mail. We also explain below how you can allocate your contribution to one of the six states (Arkansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, and Utah) where UFI chapters are taking the lead in our efforts to defend marriage.
Specifically, I am asking for your contribution to help us in a couple of key areas. We need your help to buy more lists of key voters so that we can send them the facts and the truth about marriage and the family and the importance of amending their state constitution to defend these critical institutions. We also need your help to pay for more advertisements and send factual information to local media outlets to refute the misinformation and falsehoods being spread by amendment opponents.
These are expensive undertakings but they are essential if we are going to win.
And we MUST win. The future of our society depends on protecting marriage and the family. There is no more important social or political issue facing us. Our future and that of our children and grandchildren depend on what each of us does in the weeks and months ahead.
Please help out however you can!
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Richard G. Wilkins
Chairman
We Need Your Generous Financial Support to Defend Marriage!
Please make as generous a contribution as you can to our campaign to pass marriage amendments in the eleven states where they are on the November ballot. Specifically, please consider making a contribution of at least $25, but any amount you can afford will be helpful. If enough people contribute at least a little, we can raise the money we need to win in these states.
You can easily and securely make a contribution online or print out a form to mail in a contribution.
Your contribution will be made to United Families International (UFI), a 501 (c )(3) organization, so it is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Defend Marriage is a project of UFI.
To specifically designate your contribution
If you would like to designate your contribution to go entirely to the Defend Marriage Project you can easily do so by making a contribution that ends with 4 cents, i.e. $25.04, $173.04, $1,000,000.04, and so on. That will automatically flag it to be applied entirely to Defend Marriage.
In six states, Arkansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, and Utah, United Families state chapters are taking the lead in the campaigns to support their ballot amendments. To designate your contribution to go entirely to the effort in that state, simply make a contribution through the appropriate state Web site by clicking on that state in the list above. All contributions coming made through these state Web sites are automatically coded and used to support the efforts in that state.
Thank you in advance for your generous support!
