Those Who Show Up Rule the Nation
Dear Defender of Marriage,
I am convinced that the majority of voters at every level of
government in the United States are pro-family and pro-marriage
and that is the way most would vote, IF they make it to the
polls on Election Day.
On that “IF” depends the future of our nation-- for better or for worse.
The world is run by those who show up and the direction of our government, at the local, state and national level, is set by the majority of those who show up at the polls on Election Day.
IF the pro-marriage, pro-family majority does not bother to show up to set the course for government, then the anti-family, anti-marriage minority that does show up will. That is a sobering thought.
In most elections, only about half of eligible voters show up on Election Day. Because so many of the “no-shows” would vote pro-family and pro-marriage if they did vote, too often the consequence is an increase in anti-family and anti-marriage laws and policies.
In less than two weeks we have a rare opportunity to have a personal impact on the policies of our nation by casting our votes.
But we can have a far greater impact on our government if we multiply the pro family votes by helping increase the turnout of pro-family and pro-marriage voters.
For every pro-family voter that one of us gets to the polls who otherwise would not have voted, we can increase our positive influence on the direction of government
Now, less than two weeks from Election Day, I hope each of us will be talking to our friends, family and others we have contact with and identifying those who would vote pro-family and pro-marriage but may not actually get to the polls. Then, let us do whatever we can to encourage them to vote.
It could be something as simple as a phone call or e-mail the day before. Or it may mean giving them a ride to the polls. But, whatever it takes let us do everything we can to multiply our impact in the upcoming election.
This is especially critical if you live in one of the “marriage battleground states” of Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Utah. These are the states with marriage constitutional amendments on their ballots on Election Day. If you do live in one of these states, or know people who do, you can greatly multiply your efforts to defend marriage and the family by getting out the vote to support these amendments.
It has been widely observed by many that this may be the most important election in our lifetimes. Of course, only time will tell if that is true. But with marriage such a prominent issue in this election, it may well be the most important election in our lifetime in protecting this vital institution.

We are devoting all the resources possible to supporting the eleven state constitutional marriage amendment campaigns around the country. It is imperative that we pass as many of these as possible to continue the momentum for a federal constitutional amendment and we still need your generous financial support for these efforts. Your contribution will be made to United Families International (UFI), a 501 (c )(3) organization, so it is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Defend Marriage is a project of UFI.
To specifically designate your contribution
If you would like to designate your contribution to go entirely to the Defend Marriage Project you can easily do so by making a contribution that ends with 4 cents, i.e. $25.04, $173.04, $1,000,000.04, and so on. That will automatically flag it to be applied entirely to Defend Marriage. All contributions to the Defend Marriage Project until Election Day will be used to support our efforts to pass the eleven state constitutional amendments.
In six states, Arkansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, and Utah, United Families state chapters are taking the lead in the campaigns to support their ballot amendments. To designate your contribution to go entirely to the effort in that state, simply make a contribution through the appropriate state Web site by clicking on that state in the list above. All contributions coming made through these state Web sites are automatically coded and used to support the efforts in that state.
